   I think it looks like Dombeya, which is not something I know (I queried Malvaceae inflorescence), but here's a photo of Dombeya burgessiae:

   ahh, that makes sense. I've seen Dombeyas so many times elsewhere but this is the only one I noticed in NZ so it was off my radar...
