We are relocating the UBC Orchard Garden to Totem Field at UBC and are looking for an environmentally-friendly way to keep the Canada geese out of our crops. Some of the garden perimeter will eventually have trellises, espaliered apple trees and hedgerows, but we'll need some temporary fencing too.

On the Gulf Islands I've reused old fish netting to make a deer fence. I'm thinking that would work for the geese -- what do you think? And where to buy or acquire old fish netting in the Lower Mainland? (Steveston docks? Granville Island fishing wharf?)

Although able to jump pretty high deer do not have wings, of course.

Netting the garden plots sounds like a big job. I wonder if a dog might be able to keep the geese away.

I've bought used fish netting at Steveston in the past. Try the fishing equipment supply stores, like Pacific Net & Twine.
