I recently built a 12x6x5 ft greenhouse for my mom in her back yard. We live in southern North Carolina and night time temps can drop into the 20's. Rarely does the day time low get less than 40 degrees. I wanted to know if it would be a good idea to put our 10yr old jade and my 4yr old orchids in the greenhouse for the winter? We always move them inside for the winter months but they usually do not do very well. We also have two large ficus trees and I am not sure if they will like the high humidity and moisture level of a greenhouse. Incidentally, we have two avocados that we started from scratch about 4yrs ago and they are doing wonderfully! They have grown inches in the past three weeks and seem very happy. If anyone has any hints or suggestions about greenhouse growing during winter months I would greatly appreciate it!!! Thanks
To be honest with you I have not yet checked the temps, I will go buy a thermometer and check it. The weather here sometimes changes drastically. It may be in the 60's during the day and then 50's at night and then a few days later its 30 at night and 45 in the day. I will get back to you asap. Thanks for the reply cheers
Most things will tolerate 50F to 80F without much problem. Lower than 52F you start having issues with things like Dieffenbachia turning to mush. Above 80F you'd better have ventilation.
Is this greenhouse heated or insulated? Which orchids do you have that you want to put in there? Some tropical ones can tolerate frost, but not much more than that.
