I've purchased a small "Butler" filbert tree to plant in the fall on the Gulf Islands. My web research says that a Butler variety is a pollinator. I'm now looking for a producer such as a "Barcelona" but no luck. I've found a "Royal" locally but no info on it. Is anyone familiar with this filbert?

    Thanks,

    Tara

'Barcelona' is actually a cultivar of Hazel (Corylus avellana), not Filbert (Corylus maxima). 'Butler' is a Filbert. Whether this will affect their compatibility as pollinators for each other, I'm not sure, though as the two species hybridise fairly readily it would probably be OK.

thanks Michael. Would you happen to know if the Royal is a Hazel cultivar or a Filbert?

    Cheers,

Nowadays you want to choose and plant kinds resistant to Eastern Filbert Blight. Oregon State University has been selecting and releasing new cultivars that have this attribute.

    Hi Galiano,

Thanks for the excellent tip on sourcing trees from Le Coteau Farms. We'll be planting our saplings on Galiano Island in the fall.
