    Hi there

I was wondering if anyone knows the approximate diameter of Fig tree roots - we have a few trees very well spaced out, and I'm wondering if I can dig a vegetable bed in between them? They are quite old trees and good fruit-bearers, the figs are JUST delicious picked fresh from the trees (it's a race to get to them before the birds though!).

Also, I pruned out the sucker branches last weekend - the trees are just budding now - and I need to get rid of the crossing branches too. Anyone know if this time of year is OK to continue...?

    Thanks so much

    Lu

Fig roots grow bigger depending on the size and age of the fig tree. Figs are also very forgiving to branch or root pruning as long as the tree is not stressed (disease, drought, flood) to begin with. I've dug up half of a multi trunked fig for replanting with no apparent harm to either half. You should have no problem finishing your pruning now and digging your garden. : )
Do you know what type fig you have ?

Ficus carica, to judge by the fruit description.

Thanks for that, I have started to plan my veg beds accordingly! No, I have no idea what kind of fig trees we have - they were mature trees when we bought the land. They are large trees with delicious purple figs that ripen in September. Does that help?
    :-))
