Fig tree pruned, when will it grow?

Discussion in 'Fruit and Nut Trees' started by Unregistered - Krista, Mar 11, 2005.

  1. Hi fruit tree experts,

My boyfriend has a large fig tree in his backyard in the San Francisco area of California. A couple of months ago, the gardener buzzed it, cutting off many branches and cutting back those he left. It looked like a radical procedure, but we figured the guy must know what he's doing. However, two months later, spring has sprung and all the other trees in the yard are growing new leaves, but the fig remains bare, with no obvious new growth.

Are figs just late bloomers, or is it possible that the gardener did irreparable damage? How can we tell (other than waiting until September to verify that, yes, the fig still hasn't grown any leaves)?

Thanks in advance for any help or guidance you can offer.

    Best regards,
    Krista

Sounds like you figured wrong, unfortunately. The tree has been spoiled. Probably won't die, at least not immediately, but in the meantime you now have yourself a nice stump. Later you will have a sprouting stump.
