We are putting a fountain in the front with a Japanese Maple/Tamukeyama, and a Walking Stick at the top. What can you tell me about preparing these plants for planting and about the care of the walking stick.
    Thanks, Knapp

Plant in good, well-drained soil. Do not install a fountain that will splash the maple, could cause it to blight right off--personal experience talking here (I didn't put it there, but I sure saw what happened). Japanese maples are prone to fungal/bacterial problems and cannot abide sogginess at the root.

If existing soil not "good garden soil" excavate large area and replace with good soil or put good soil on top and plant in that. Do not incorporate organic amendments or sand. Do fertilize at planting if soil test indicates a need, using a formulation that addresses specific deficiency as indicated by test report.
