Just wondering if there are any good fern books out there. I'm looking to learn more about them as wild plants rather than as garden specimens but a A-Z of garden ferns would be good too. Where do I start? Which authors are authorities on these fascinating plants?

Welsh Ferns (Hyde, Wade & Harrison) is the absolute must. Although it concentrates on Welsh species and distributions, the one or two UK species which don't occur in Wales are also well described.

"Encyclopedia of Ferns" by David Jones is helpful also.
