Those aren't yellow. I didn't look at the pictures, but it sounds like they show a yellow flower. Sternbergia is pretty distinctive.
Hi Deaf Planter, See if you can id it from these pics of different varieties of Sternbergia. http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=Sternbergia&btnG=Search+Images Newt
Tony and Newt, they do look alot like Sternbergia. Thanks! (of course, I am thanking everyone for their help too) :) Do they bloom in Fall?
We gave these out as favours at our wedding. The Greek gods Zeus and Hura loved each other so passionatly that wherever they walked the land burst forth with Crocus. They are very easy to grow they can be put into lawns or in boarders or under trees in drifts. Plant with a trowel about 8cm deep. They come in gold, Violet, Lilac and White. There are some beautiful varigated purple and white ones too. Crocus Sativus is the variety from which Saffron is harvested, grown in turkey and Iran, It is quite a challenge to grow. It has light purple flowers. Crocus came to the United States with the early settlers who planted them around their cabins
I really don't think they are crocus. I looked at some pictures of crocus and they don't really look like the plants I have in my front yard. The plants I have do not have long white stripes on their leaves , unless there are crocus that don't have stripes on them. I will take a closer picture of them next fall.
