I have a 10 year old established Linden tree in my yard that has flourished until this Spring when we noticed that only 1/3 of the tree has leafed out. There are many small dead branches within the tree. I'm not sure what kind of Linden it is... we have 2 other American Lindens in the same area that are younger and doing well. This Linden is pyramid shaped and has lighter green leaves. It is 5 feet away from a flower bed where I have used an overhead sprinkle in the past that also hits the tree trunk. Could that be the problem? The tree is flowering right now, but looks a little transparent - should I fertilze it? If so, when and how. I've never fertilized any of my trees. We live in North Dakota - Zone 3.
