Are Araucaria araucana and A, angustifolia exportable from USA? I have found sources for this seed and want to import it into Australia. I understand there are shipping issues out of US. Can anyone confirm this and possibly where I might find their elucidation. Thanks in advance.
I'd think Australian plant health import regulations (notoriously tough) are going to be the problem for you. Araucaria araucana is CITES-listed, which means trade in wild-origin seed (i.e., from Chile or Argentina) is controlled for conservation purposes, but that won't affect seed from cultivated trees.
Micheal F Thanks for that. Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS) is well known to me!! I await their reply to my enquiry. On initial perusal no issue is raised concerning these two species imported as seed. However what may they find? Thanks for the CITIES details.
The other thing to watch for is seed quality - you need to check with the supplier that the seeds have been stored correctly. Araucaria seed is very sensitive to desiccation, and loses its viability quickly if not stored cool and moist. PS: CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), not CITIES ;-)
Michael F Thanks for the advice concerning storage of Araucaria seed. My spelling is appaulling. Feel free to point out my failings. It is one of many unfortunately.
