I recently lost two evergreen climatis plants to wilt. One was newly planted in the spring and the other had been planted in July 2006. The older one had made it through a very hard winter but put on new growth in the spring. Then it developed the wilt and was gone in a short time. I'm wondering if there is any way to start new plants in the same area. I've read on some garden web sites that it is next to impossible because the spores that cause the wilt live in the soil. Can't I just remove all the soil in that area? I'd like to start them in the same spot since it's next to a trellis.

Thanks for any help I can get.
