My big ceonothus was hit very hard this winter. There's only a few green branches left, the rest are brown. Taking a few cutting from branches with brown leaves I can see it isn't dead - just really unsightly. Is it worth waiting till after bloom time to prune then see if I can salvage it? It would be difficult (and sad) to remove as it was planted with a Caehray's Bell Magnolia 15 years ago so tree & shrub are large.

    Advice appreciated.

Wait until summer to see what has leafed out. Then prune back any dead tips to just above the new growth.

Hi Tara, it is likely that your Ceanothus has suffered severe winter burn and may even have perished, as have the many dozens throughout the Lower Mainland. You can cut back to green wood now, or wait until after this weeks' mini deep freeze that we are expecting by Wednesday.... :(
