    Hi Alex,
You will spend a fortune making a hedge with evergreen maples!!! ;-)))
The list of evergreen maples contain among others: cordatum, coriaceifolium, fabri, laevigatum, laurinum, lucidum, oblongum, obtusifolium, paxii, sempervivens,...
The main drawback for these species is that they tend to be cold tender. For example I am in zone 8 and have lost an oblongum but a coriaceifolium seems to thrive.

You are at least zone 9 and you probably may try many of them. However I do not know how well they will respond to yearly trimming.

On the other hand, why not consider using the 'hedge' maple instead?, Acer campestre has many cultivars and you could design a very pretty hedge with them.

    Ciao

    Gomero

Acer sempervirens would be the best adapted to the Italian climate.

    A. obtusifolium is comparatively hardy and handsome, but a small-leaved A. campestre relation like A. sempervirens would have a better texture for hedging.

Acer monspessulanum can be another option for hedge, it thrives in the Mediterranean climate and it's leaves wait to drop until late fall.

Common names are never improper or proper. Those who feel the need for some reason can make lists of official common names for plants until the sun burns out and others will still be coining and using a myriad of other common names.

But what makes you think that Europe should be made to change over to using your re-naming, rather than the local native name? Colonialism? Imperialism?
