British Columbia: European Wild Garlic Help!

Hello everyone,

I purchased a European Wild Garlic several years back at the VanDeusen rare plants sale. I loved my wild garlic and every year looked forward to it. Alas I do not think that it made it throught the winter for which I am to blame. So I am hoping to replace my wild garlic with a whole lot more.

Can anyone please help me?

One of the commonest native bulb plants around here, got a big patch of it in the garden. If it is legal to send seed to Canada, I can easily do so when they ripen in early summer.

 

Looks like any allium bulbs to Canada from the UK require both an import permit and a phyto. cert as well...via the CFIA Automated Import Reference System (http://airs-sari.inspection.gc.ca/airs_external/english/decisions-eng.aspx).

Seeds are fine, however: no restrictions/requirements.

 

The other potential risk: I can see it being a very invasive plant in BC. Is it a known problem species already?

 

My understanding is that it is considered invasive and so very difficult to find here. The concern is that it will get hold on the prairies. That said, I've never heard of it being a problem...

 

Don't think it would be a problem in the prairies. It likes damp soils in woodlands in an oceanic climate, so would be very much 'at home' in southwestern BC.

 

It's been in flower for the last couple of weeks, here's some pics of it growing in the wild in Northumberland, UK.

You can see why I suspect it might have invasive potential in Vancouver ;-)

 

I just purchased a plant of wild garlic (Allium ursinum) from a lady who has a large cluster of these in her yard. Apparently it grows very well in the Vancouver area. I hope to utilize this plant as a way to get something edible out of shady parts of my yard.

 

I accidentally came across this site as I am interested in growing some wild garlic to harvest the leaves as salad green (I like stronger taste plants for salad such as arugula and mustard). Does anyone have any spare plants that I may have?

 

I just germinated some wild garlic seeds last week.
After I did some research for its germinate requirement, I got a lot of different information from internet. It’s so confusing. lol

If they sprout smoothly,
I will share the experience here.
