Does anyone have photos they can share of what our common landscape euphorbias (characia or winter blue, for example) look like in the dead of winter? Like what do they do in “their worst of times”? I need something in my garden that looks good late February to early May. I know they look good in April and May, but what about January, February and March??
Based on my experience, I don't think you should have any trouble finding a Euphorbia that looks good early in the year. These two in my garden are seedlings from Euphorbia x martinii ‘Rudolph’ and Euphorbia polychroma ‘Bonfire’ which germinated after the original plants died. The first picture was taken in mid January, the other 2 in early March. E. characias sp. wulfenii wouldn't be my first choice because, not only does it grow too large and rangy for my garden, it also self-seeds a lot if you don't dead-head it quickly enough. A thread titled 'euphorbia characias wulfenii' from August 2004 says, ". . . they did well through winter, flowering with beautiful chartreuse flowers." euphorbia characias wulfennii
