I recently transplanted an E. intermedia "Rostrevor" to a sunnier spot where an old, dying Rhodo had been. I remediated the soil with compost and sand before planting, and have used a good quality slow release organic fertilizer, but the tree is doing poorly.

It's not leafing out well, and most of the leaves now bear a stripe or spotting with a deep purplish cast. This is not typical of this species, based on the leaves that first emerged or last year's growth, and pictures on the web confirm it.

Any ideas about what is going on, and what I should do?

    Many thanks!

    Important points are

    - what killed the rhododendron and if it still there

    - the amending of the planting area - amending of individual planting holes for trees and shrubs is not helpful

    - how could it got there this past winter - your eucryphia may simply have frozen
