Re: Eucalyptus and a boundary wall Hi LPN I want to start up with a Eucalyptus Plantation in India. I have around 3-5 Acres of land for this too that I can buy. I read that you already have an extensive experience with the tree, So as a First Timer would love to get your valuable suggestions. The purpose of the plantation is primarily financial support some years down the line and with time increase it to a full time business too. Please Suggest Thank You !! Rajiv
Re: Eucalyptus and a boundary wall I plan to grow trees for around 5-6 years and then use cut them and sell them in the market. I hope i answered the question appropriately Rajiv
Assuming you are somewhere on the plains of India, the best species to grow is almost certainly E. camaldulensis. I have seen extensive plantations of it in Thailand, mostly in the drier provinces east of Bangkok. It's probably one of the most drought and heat tolerant species and trhrives on poor sandy (but deep) soils. A lot of it goes into poles, any size from 3 cm to about 10 cm diameter, used for fencing, scaffolding and rough building work. I also saw truckloads of cut short lengths, which I guess might have been intended for firewood, industrial fuel, or wood pulp. I doubt that cultivation presents many difficulties. Have look at this link. http://www.worldagroforestrycentre.org/Sites/TreeDBS/aft/docs/Eucalyptus_camaldulensis.doc Just one thing: it's a species of wide geographic range in Australia and hence great genetic variability. It would be worth while to source your seed from strains of known high performance in your region.
