I purchased a manna gum, eucalyptus viminalis because it was identified to me by the seller as being hardy, fast growing and having a mature height of between 10 and 30 feet. A quick search has indicated that it grows to 100 feet. Is it that it will only grow to 30 feet in this climate but will grow to 100 in warmer places? My front yard is only 1000 sqr feet and this was to be planted 20 feet from my house. I am in Nanaimo BC. My street is somewhat sheltered from wind. The spot is my sunniest and gets decent sun in the summer.
The answer is that 10'-30' wasn't the estimated mature height, but rather the supposed height in 10 years - although it wouldn't take nearly that long to grow that tall, either! Figure on at least 60'. Some gums down here are growing something like 6' per year, or more, under current conditions.
