There is an Ukigumo near my house which is about 12 feet tall. It's planted in full sun. When I last looked at it about 2-1/2 years ago, only one-third of the branches had leaves with white variegation. I went down to look at it today, and none of the leaves in the canopy is variegated. There are three or four slender shoots on the lower trunk that have variegated leaves. I'm curious about this because my neighbor bought a small Ukigumo last year. In late summer she pruned it way back, because the leaves on the ends of its branches were not variegated. Her tree is also planted in full sun. Why are these trees losing their variegation? Does sun exposure have anything to do with it?
Hello Susan, I found this posting on the UBC Botanical Garden Forums from a number of weeks ago. Dale B. from The Maple Society comments on 'Ukigumo' at the bottom of thread. Raakel
