I have two new apple trees on dwarf stock, purchased at the UBC Apple Festival in 2008. I hope to attend the espalier course at UBC in June, but in the meantime, is there anything I should do to start the process in spring? Thanks
I found this one from the apple isle (Tasmania) http://www.woodbridgefruittrees.com.au/resources/Articles/Espaliering Made Even Easier (KNNN).pdf Via this web page http://www.shovelandrake.com/?p=63 A pic of what it may one day become http://flickr.com/photos/robroy/495390207/ http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/basics/techniques/growfruitandveg_espalierapple1.shtml
There's an excellent book I use as a reference: 'Pruning and Training' by Christopher Brickell & David Joyce. I bought a copy at the UBC 'In the Garden' store, after a workshop on pruning. It has a good section on fruit tree training. Apple espalier training cuts should start in winter. Have fun!
