Erosion control / waterwise plants in a Chilean garden

The following was received via email:

I wonder if you could direct me to resources for the following. My husband and I have purchased a property in Chile just outside Santiago. We will be slowly rehabilitating the garden. Part of the garden is on a steep slope and needs planting to assist in erosion control. Can you suggest sources- organizations in Chile to consult with? Secondly, I want to be as efficient as possible with water (we have an extensive system for re cycling grey water and holding water from the winter rain in cisterns for use in the summer). Can you suggest a good sourcebook for garden plants for conditions of hot and dry in summer and moderate but wet in winter.

The garden has a number of spectacular palms but was originally designed as an English garden- a novelty in the area. I prefer to slowly create a unique melding of native and historic plants.

To answer the first part of the question, I'd seek out some of the Chilean botanic gardens to see if some of them have a botanico-horticultural advice component: Chilean Botanic Gardens via Botanic Gardens Conservation International

As for the second part, I'll leave it open for others to answer, but I will note that those conditions (as described) are similar to much of coastal western North America.
