Found in damp woods by a stream in Naramata BC

 

Symphyotrichum, I think, possibly Symphyotrichum ciliolatum

 

Thanks so much Daniel I agree! Pity I have old books since the powers that be changed the name from Aster to Symphyotrichum!!

 

Yes, the new rule of thumb (since it doesn't work in all instances):

the genus Aster is found in Eurasia
the genus Symphyotrichum is found in North, Central and South America
