New to the forum, thank you. Have a well established Emperor One Japanese Maple. This year one side is growing great , looks great the other side is very slow growing. I do see some new buds and some flowers starting to grow on the bad side but very slow. Should I be worried. I don't want to replace it yet. Should I wait for about 2 to 3 weeks and see what happens. Thanks so much. See alot of buds that are not grown yet on the bad side. thanks
Does the slower side get hit with all the winter wind? (or it can happen if one side is in the shade). The winter wind or low amount of available light will reduce the number of new buds. If wind is the problem and the tree is not too large, a burlap screen can be used in late fall / early winter to help protect the tree. You can also use 0-10-10 fertilizer in August and September to help prepare the tree for winter and improve winter hardiness. If winter wind is a problem, you will notice some years are worse than others.
thanks so much, each day I see a little more improvement, maybe the wind did effect it on that side, just going to wait.
