I live on in the Pender Harbour area of the Sunshine Coast. Other than putting in tens of thousands worth of fencing on 5 acres, what are possible deterents to elk (herd of at least 8 who trample through electric fences like nothing if startled). I have noticed they don't like shasta daisies or lavender, but are there other plants they don't like?

    Thank you,
    Elizabeth

I never found any when I lived in elk country, but what I did find that worked almost 100% of the time was motion activated sprinklers close to my garden beds. One good squirt and they went the other way. Worked on deer and Canada geese, too.

You have to do something or you are constantly subject to the animals' whims. Maybe fence a small area for certain plants rather than trying to have temptations scattered over a property too large to fence. When I volunteered there during the early years of the Seattle Rhododendron Society taking over the Meerkerk property on Whidbey Island I saw that what Ann had done was build a couple small enclosures for plants liable to be browsed by deer, and plant the rest of the place with rhododendrons and other plants found to be off the menu.

There are many plants wildlife won't browse on. Here's one that works for me.

    Cheers, LPN.
