Before that horrible cold snap we had, I snugged my potted bay shrub and my pomegranate tight against the house wall on my balcony, wrapped and sealed them together in heavy poly (held out from the branches with bamboo stakes) and ran white incandescent Christmas lights through the plants to provide a bit of heat. I piled bags of packing peanuts and leaves around the pots as well for additional insulation. This seemed to work relatively well, and the pomegranate is budding nicely. The bay seems to have come off worse. I have several branches with up to a foot of winterkill. Am I okay to just prune off the killed tips? If so, how far past the winterkill should I prune?

I'm not sure what's best for Bay Laurel; but for tender plants in general, I just wait for new growth to appear and then prune off any dead wood above it.

Vitog's general advice works for Laurus too. There's a good chance it is only the leaves that have been killed, the shoots and buds may be OK - see what leafs out in spring.
