Attached is a picture of my rhodo taken yesterday in full bloom. Note the number of new shoots without blooms that my wife calls Bracchia. I believe that the plant could do much better, perhaps if I pruned it more effectively. Is it simply a matter of pruning just above the latent buds at the top of the old wood as I have read online, or is there something else that I should be doing?
What are you hoping to accomplish with pruning? More flowers? There is a significant year-to-year variation in flowering in rhododendrons. If you are looking at pruning for maintenance reasons, have a read through these resources: Pruning Rhododendrons and Azaleas and Spent Flower Removal https://www.plantamnesty.org/assets/docs/Cyberlibrary/Shrubs/my rhodies too big.pdf
