I’ve been thinking about changing my major to something in the botanical field. I was thinking about a bachelor in Biology with a botany option and a minor in Horticulture or vice versa…not sure about grad school yet. I’m shooting for a government job or maybe something in a botanical garden. So I’m wondering what degrees some of you professionals hold and what kind of job opportunities were available to you fresh out of college.
What kind of work do you you want to do? Do you want to teach? Work in a garden? Supervise? Research?
Don't just do course work, also get yourself thoroughly immersed in your local plants, native and others. Buy a set of plant identification books, and keep them by your side until you can recognise every species around you. Start a personal herbarium (collection of dried pressed plants), so far as conditions and regulations will allow you to do so (i.e., don't pinch plants from other peoples' gardens, or endangered species from reserves!!). The younger you get started on this, the better!
Sorry been so long since i posted this i stopped checking for replies. Basically from what i understand there has been very little done in the way of classification and mapping in Kentucky(where im going to school). I was thinking of getting in on some surveys and seeing where it goes from there.
Just an FYI - under "Thread Tools" in the upper right corner, you can subscribe to this thread and receive email notification of replies.
