In my zone much planting is done on the 24 of May. Depending upon the Spring weather my vegetables are planted earlier, hoping they will thrive and survive the minor frosts of late April and May. The growth is more than reasonable for this time of year, and bug damage is minimal.
One question, did you chop the artichoke plant too low? And what is that plant growing within the patch as well? It appears that if you go to within a few inches of ground level with mulching that you should have done well with fresh growth. Mine is going bazerk right now. All else is looking great. Of course you must distribute lots of the extra food to some needy family, school, something? Too much food for just you.
Your garden looks great and everything seems to be doing well. It's finally warmed up here and hopefully things will start to grow. I planted some of my tomatoes in my raised beds and hopefully they will survive.
Jan, don't you have some plastic tarp to canopy over them in the bed? This will build the soil heat you are concerned about, and for plant temps minimum needed growth.
I did cover the tomatoes. They have hot caps on top of each plant and a cloche over the whole thing. Once they get settled in I am going to try growing them up strings on a trellis.
