My friend has this tree in his garden. His wife has eaten one of the cherry like fruits and said they taste a bit sour (she thought they were cherries).

Does anyone know what the tree is and if the "fruits" are indeed edible?

    Many thanks

Looks like ornamental cherry to me. If I'm right, yes they're edible and best in jams.

Cherry Plum Prunus cerasifera, one of the many purple-leaf cultivars. Yes, edible, either fresh (when fully ripe), or made into plum pie or jam.
