Something keeps attacking my new dogwood trees. The first new dogwood tree fell over because the root system was completely gone. The second tree was still in the pot that I purchased it in and something dug it out of the pot and ate the roots. It hasn't attacked anything else and i'm always planting something new. Any ideas?

the only things that would eat roots by digging down to them would be rodentslike vole, also known as field mice, or meadow mice, they love roots of young trees and plants. next time you plant one before you fill in the hole put a wire mesh around it, about a foot from the root ball and then fill it in, you can also put some mesh around the tree and mulch on top of that, this way the critters doing the harm can't dig down. hopefully it will work, someone else might give you other ideas as well.

Thanks for the advice on the dogwood problem. I will try the mesh wire you suggested.
