Hello, I have tried to grow some red cedar on my balcony. Its around 5-15 degrees here in Geneva (Switzerland). The container that holds the earth and seeds is submerged in a basin with water so most times it is humid. Unfortunately I suspect that some kind of fungus has grown and I dont know why or what to do against it. I was hoping that my keeping the earth uncovered and well supplied with fresh air this would not happen. Could someone advise why it happened and if there is something I can do against it or if I have to throw the whole lot away (what do do with this earth- I dont think its good to re-use it). (see attachment)
Your planter shouldn't be submersed in water. that is what is killing your cedar (if it isn't dead already). The planter should have a drain hole in the bottom for excess water to drain out.
I see. What a silly mistake to make. I will follow your advise. Any idea how to dispose of this infected soil now? Do I need to water the soil then daily to ensure its moist enough?
i wouldn't worry about disposing your soil, just spread it out on your garden or flower beds and it will dry out and the fungis will disappear. For a tree in a planter, I would give it a good soak until water runs out the bottom of the planter's drain hole, and then leave it until the soil dries in the top 2 inches of the planter (depending on the weather any where from a week to one or two days). Then give it some more water.
