Noticed this beautiful tree in full bloom on March 19th. Its blossoms are slightly smaller than those of Prunus Cerasifera. And it's blooming ahead of the plum trees in the area. Up close, it produces a pleasant light fragrance. Can anyone help id this?
This is a plum, I think species Prunus domestica. It looks similar to one posted last year at Plums. Read the posts following that (on the next page) to get to where we figured it out.
Numerous slender shoots, reflexed sepals and March flowering time imply Prunus cerasifera. Otherwise, if the hyperlinked Prunus is clicked on near the top of the following page it leads to the main genus entry. Where the complexities and difficulties still present within the interpretation of that genus is detailed in the narrative. And a key to species present in North America is provided. @Ron B, are you saying that those characteristics imply that this individual is Prunus cerasifera? So I should ID the tree in the other thread as that as well?
I'm saying I think the current identification should be reviewed. As for the other thread I don't remember what is on it, if I have ever seen it. And at the moment I need to run along.
This one looks different from the one you linked in the other thread. I'm leaning towards this being Prunus cerasifera. Some reference photos I found. CalPhotos I can always go back and check the fruit later in the year. :)
