Hello! This is my first post! I replied to an older thread on this subject but thought I might get a faster response by posting a new one! I have an enormous 40ft plus tall 25 yr old tree that has lost all of its leaves and is showing no new growth at this time! Yes we did have what some older folks in town say is the coldest winter here in 80 yrs! If it is possible that my tree will regenerate.... how long should I wait be for cutting it down? It is next to my garage and near my home! This once beautiful and fragrant tree could be a menace! Any input is appreciated! Thank you! I have also attached 3 pics. One is from this past Dec. The tree is in the background behind my lovely Irish Wolfhound Conan. and the other 2 I just took this morning.
Winter cold is certainly the cause. It may leaf out from lower down the trunk where the outer bark was thick enough to protect the live inner bark from the cold damage. Wait until the end of June to see what new growth there is (yes, it can take that long!), then prune back to the top new foliage on each branch.
