I live on Denman Island and want to grow a few Dwarf fruit trees on my deck. What would be the best kind of Apricot, Cherry and Nectarine to try?
Given your location, and the fact that some of the best varieties of a given tree aren't always available in Canada, here's a list of decent varieties that should be locally available...bear in mind that a lot of dwarf stock sells out early in the season, so you might be stuck until next season. Apricot: don't know about dwarfs, but Puget Gold is supposed to be decent. Look at Dinter's nursery in Duncan, they carry about 3 varieties. Cherry: Compact Stella and anything on Gisela rootstock would work. I can vouch for Stella: lots of fruit on a small tree. Nectarine: "Hardy Red" seems to be the most common one locally.
Usually on Colt rootstock, but as this variety originates in a smaller, less vigorous sport of "Stella", the combination results in a more compact tree.
