Our Alberta Spruce has another type of evergreen growing out of the top of it. It started 2 years ago; but this summer it has really taken off. I believe it is a Blue Spruce. Why after 13 years did it start growing out the top? Cindy

It is a reversion to normal (i.e., non-dwarf) Alberta Spruce. If you want to keep it as a dwarf, prune this branch out. If you like the idea of it growing into a medium-large tree, let the non-dwarf part grow on; eventually it will form a proper tree with a nice shape.

Will look much more ordinary than the cultivar. You'll probably want to cut it out - especially since the cultivar has been there 13 years and may be a nice specimen. If you let the reversion grow it will eventually take over.
