I am part of a busy team at a Tree Nursery and my main job is stock and dispatch control. We are looking into a new way to label all our trees to hold all the relevant information we need to identify the them and there origin. What we are having trouble with is finding a durable elastic band or something similar to attach the label to the tree at eye level. This band needs to be able to withstand the weather and stay strong for at least two years! Does anyone have any ideas or know of a good product that i can look into! Any help gratefully received! Rachel
I don't know of any elastic product that will keep its tensile strength for 2 years exposed to the elements, but what I have found that works absolutely wonderfully is broad plastic tomato-growers' twine. This stuff doesn't break down, doesn't snap, and doesn't seem to be affected by either extreme heat or extreme cold. It also comes in a range of colours, which is handy for colour-coding the trees. Looks kind of like this.
I know of the perfect material, but I don't know of it being available "ready to use" for this purpose. If you don't mind a bit of DIY, offcuts of Butyl rubber pond liner can be cut into thin strips very much like a strong elastic band. It is the best material I have ever used for tying plants to stakes etc., strong, flexible, slightly elastic and virtually indestructible. Probably not practical for a large scale application though.
