March 24, 2026 W 31st Ave & Blenheim St 4691 Blenheim St - 'Snow Goose' I noticed this tree on the way home so went to take a look at it earlier in the week. The Vancouver Public Tree map indicates that it's 'Snow Goose'. W 32nd Ave & between Blenheim St & Balaclava St - 'Akebono'
March 28, 2026 W 20th & Crown St On my way to check out the trees that Taka posted about, I noticed that Vancouver Public Tree map had an 'Ukon' and 'Shirofugen' labelled on W20th to the west of Crown. The 'Ukon' looks like it's mislabeled on the map, as it looked like an 'Akebono' to me. The tree west of it, was only just starting to have buds. The Public Tree map has it labelled as 'Shirofugen' but I couldn't find enough flowers to really get a good look.
March 28, 2026 Crown St & W18th Ave - 'Akebono' & 'Somei Yoshino' Went for a walk to find these trees that Taka posted about. Coming upon them, the larger tree to the south was almost completely white whereas the tree closer to the intersection was more pink. Comparing the two trees, I believe the one closer to the van is a 'Somei-Yoshino'. This is labelled as 'JAPANESE FLOWERING CHERRY' on the Public Tree map. The smaller tree looks like 'Akebono'. This is labelled as 'KWANZAN FLOWERING CHERRY' on the Public Tree map. I compared the flowers that had fallen as well (left is the smaller tree closer to the intersection, right is the tree near the van)
Re: posting 177, I agree on the 'Akebono'. I think the various street tree map sites use the city's database as their source. The city has never been receptive to us about corrections to the cherry data. Your flower photo in that posting looks like 'Shirotae'. The buds are too far advanced to be 'Shiro-fugen', and the flowers, while double white, are not quite the same.
March 28, 2026 Highbury St & W 21st Ave - 3804 W21st Ave Noticed a private tree in the backyard that looked like a 'Somei-Yoshino'.
We have not yet had reason to discard Douglas Justice's claim that of the two, only 'Akebono' have petaloids, one of which is visible on the flower on the left, which you're saying is the one near the van, so the possible 'Somei-yoshino'. If you have not mixed up the two in your description, that should make both trees 'Akebono', as the tree near the corner is not in question. It is definitely the case that trees growing very close to each other can progress in their blooming at different rates, and some 'Akebono' have appeared not even open, or still quite pink, right next to 'Akebono' that are completely open and turned very white. I do wonder, though, about the hairy pedicels, and it looks like big stars. Are you sure you haven't mixed up the blossom photos?
Oh my gosh Wendy, you're completely correct. I was thinking left but typed right! I'm so sorry for the confusion! I have adjusted my post! The flower on the left is of the smaller tree closer to the intersection. The flower on the right is the larger tree near the van.
Thanks, @ricchan. I'll agree then that the tree near the van is 'Somei-yoshino', with larger stars from the front, and hairier pedicels.
The 'Shiro-fugen' on the block of West 24th west from Highbury are in bloom. They're looking good, but every one has rootstock suckers. Maybe the Parks Board doesn't know what these trees are, or doesn't care. Newer trees are 'Kanzan' and 'Akebono'. There is of course a lot of 'Kanzan' in this neighbourhood. This is 21st Avenue, I think looking east from Wallace. The 'Shujaku' on 20th at Wallace is still there, looking good, only one sucker from the trunk.
