My chinese fan palm (livistona chinensis) is not doing well. On some of the leaves (mainly the higher ones) they have dried right out except for a little bit near the bottom of the leaf. Does anyone know If the plant could recover, or if I should trim the dried leaves? This plant is a clumped planting of about 8 individual plants. Is it bad for the individual plants to stay together like they are?Any ideas on why it's not doing well. I water regularly with good drainage and it has direct afternoon sun.

    Thanks

That foliage looks burned. As in too much sun, cold or wind.
Was it exposed to any of those? It will be stunted left in a
community pot and some or most may die off in time leaving
one or two. Trim off only the browned section leaving any
green to allow them to recover more quickly.

Chris, It is kept indoors so it was not exposed to cold or wind. As for sun it gets afternoon direct sun for about 4 hrs. When I first got this plant a few weeks ago it did not have good enough drainage, and the roots were sitting in an inch of water. could that be the problem?

Most likely, since the leaves are dry the root hairs suffocated.
Strange tho since I've seen them growing in muck soils in FL.
Cypress swamps. I wonder if the leaves got frosted between
the nursery/store and the time you got it into your nice warm
home? That happens a lot in winter in cold climates like yours.
