For three decades, I have been a serious collector of WWII memorablia. I recently acquired a German helmet that was still in the crate that it was shipped back to the United States from Europe in. The helmet still had some of the original foliage within the net attached to the helmet. The plant appears to be a fern. The soldier who sent this helmet home served in France and Germany.
I am hoping that someone can identify the type of fern for me and perhaps tell me where and when it grows. Could this have come from the hedgerows of France during the fighting at Normandy in the summer of 1944? I welcome all comments. Please send me an e-mail at Feldpost@aol.com or respond to this thread. Thanks!

Pteridium aquilinum (Bracken). Abundant throughout most of Europe.
