I was wondering if anyone has tried sowing the seeds of Dragon Fruit, (The red/pink fruit from a cactus plant in Taiwan ). I have kids learning about different foods that they can grow where they get the seeds from food at the grocery store. They have started basic, with orange trees, and papaya and such, but none of them have probably even heared Dragon fruit, the name will grab the kids attention alone. If anyone knows, the requirements for the seeds and how to plant them successfully, I would be deeply grateful. (The latin name is Hylocereus Undatus So I'm told) Carol Ja _________________ The road to paradise is planted with beautiful tropicals.
I germinated seeds of a similar plant, Yellow Pitaya, by carefully picking out the seeds, placing them on top of a container of soil, then sprinkling a thin layer of soil on top to cover them up, and keeping the mix moist.
I can't quantify it but I ended up with more than I wanted. I would say they're easy as there was no pampering involved.
Re: Dragon Fruit from seed I just planted dragon fruit seeds about a month ago using a plastic take-out box and part regular potting mix + peat moss (just because it was what I had on hand; mixing in course sand would be a good thing I think). I made little cuts in the bottom of the plastic container, sprinkled the tiny seeds on top of the soil and left it by a window. They sprouted almost immediately (within 2 days) and are growing quite quickly; they *love* their mini-greenhouse & now I have *way* more seedlings than I know what to do with! I would highly recommend growing dragon fruit seeds as a fun experiment for kids since they germinate so fast and at such a high success rate.
Carol - they are super easy to grow! I've put up full growing instructions on another forum, feel free to check it out. http://www.yougrowgirl.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3672
