This forum says it's for "UBC BG plants, events and people", so here are some photos from Douglas Justice's noon-hour talk and walk today. We saw so many maples, and I knew so few of them, that I'm just posting a few photos that I'm relatively sure of, and then a couple of others. We saw a lot of snake bark maples. I learned that they don't all have striped bark, but the bark often (always?) has photosynthetic capability. I found a Davidsonia article Douglas wrote about snake barks at UBC Botanical Garden: http://www.davidsonia.org/files/13_3_snake_bark.pdf This is Acer davidii, Father David's snake bark maple. Acer griseum. People like to take photos of the sun shining through the bark, but anyone can do that. The trick is getting the sunlit bark when there isn't any sun, eh? Acer shirasawanum, not the 'Aureum' cultivar Was this Acer palmatum 'Osakazuki'? And was this Acer japonicum 'O isami'? You can see the upcoming lectures and courses list at http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/education/courses_lectures.php
Daniel has now posted this news about the maples collection in separate thread: Acer Collection at UBC BG Rated 2nd in Conservation Importance Worldwide.
