All four Douglas Firs in my back yard have this problem with yellow spots covering the needles. Anyone know exactly what this is or how to get rid of it? BTW, the nearest Blue Spruce is ~50 feet away. http://www.fototime.com/068F891E5F575A8/standard.jpg http://www.fototime.com/653A845E568BF38/standard.jpg Thanks.
Hi Wade, Take a look here at Rhabdocline needlecast and Swiss needlecast. http://www.caes.state.ct.us/PlantPestHandbookFiles/pphD/pphdoug.htm Newt
Looks to me more like where Adelges cooleyi (a sap-sucking insect) has been feeding - look for a small black dot on the underside beneath the yellow patch, often also with some white wool. The needlecast diseases are primarily a problem of interior DF (Pseudotsuga menziesii subsp. glauca), and don't generally affect the coastal subsp. menziesii.
Hi Check out the little black dot in the upper center of the photo and as Micheal F says that may be your critter Regards Doug
Thanks for the info Michael. Wow, good eyes on the black dot doug! I never saw that. There also apears to be some small webbing in areas but no wooly-like substances. Here's a few more shots of the branches on the underside. http://www.fototime.com/F97E8C29B4350E0/standard.jpg http://www.fototime.com/BCA041016E0B161/standard.jpg http://www.fototime.com/A70066466181DD3/standard.jpg Just need figure out how to eradicate these pests before/if they spread to my treasured Fraser Firs. :)
