I have a young dogwood planted in my front yard and recently found out my sewer line has collapsed and must be dug up...and wouldn't you know the dogwood is right above it. The excavation company said the tree is small enough that they can dig it out with their back hoe and replace it when they are finished. Any suggestions for how to help the tree with this transition with the least amount of stress. If it matters, the tree has just finished flowering.
Make sure it is moist before digging, unless watering it would create problems with the collapse. Have them store it in the shade. The more gently it is handled, the better. Preparations should be made for avoiding the shaft of the digging arm taking part of the bark off.
