Hello, I'm new and desperate! Does anyone know of a shade loving evergreen or shrub that won't hurt my dog should he nibble? I'm looking at Clethra and Acuba Japonica. I really don't want to resort to cement! Thanks! Doglover
Hi Doglover, I'm in Maryland too! Here's some lists of toxic plants. I don't like cement either. :) http://www.aragriculture.org/horticulture/ornamentals/plant_material/toxic.asp http://www.library.uiuc.edu/vex/toxic/toxic.htm http://www.sniksnak.com/plants.html http://vm.cfsan.fda.gov/~djw/readme.html Newt
Hey Doglover and Newt, I am more of a cat-person myself. The ASPCA has a list of common plants that have not been reported to be toxic to animals. It is an incomplete list of course, but it gives some options. Mahonia and Jacob's ladder would be nice plants for a shady garden. http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=pets_nontoxicplants This Sunset article also advised against thorny plants for gardens with dogs. Eric, great links! I have 2 cats along with my 3 dogs, but I'm a dog person at heart. It's funny though as I work in animal rescue and 98% of the animals we rescue are cats. Go figure! Newt
