Can anyone please tell me what kind of a tree produces this berry. I found this on a tree in the court yard of the school that I teach at. I can not figure out what it is. My students find it very interesting. As do I.

I think what's being referred to, among the dozens of species of dogwoods, is Kousa dogwood, Cornus kousa.

Yep, Cornus kousa. They are edible; quality varies, from bland to gritty to very nice.
