I just bought a house where there's a tall cherry tree (15~17feet) right in front of the house (3feet away from the siding). My friend told me I should cut the tree off immediately. Should I do it? Any alternative to save the tree?

17' is nothing for a tree. Visualize it alot taller, with a thicker trunk in that same spot. Maybe you don't want that. Otherwise, keep it.

Thanks! Do you know if a cherry tree can grow much higher (like over 30feet)?
My friend told me the tree root is likely to damage the house foundation since it's so close. Is that typically true?

Sweet cherry and some others can grow large, it has not been established which particular kind you have so impossible to say what you might expect.

if you are concerned have a qualified arborist, or 2, have a look and prepare a tree report if it is needed over a simple visual and verbal assessment.
