Identification: do I have a sick pineapple plant?

Discussion in 'Indoor and Greenhouse Plants' started by Unregistered, Feb 23, 2006.

  1. I bought a plant from a garage sale (South West Australia) And was told it was a 'pineapple plant'. Definately not the real thing though. It has very long light green fleshy leaves spotted with burgandy. One long stem in centre with tiny white flowers and green leafy top that resembles a pineapple. I cannot recall if at the time he suggested to cut off the flower head or not after it has bloomed. The whole plant is looking quite sorry for itself, and my fear is if I dont cut the stem off soon the whole plant will die. What have I got? what must I do? Please help!
    Sorry no picture if it!

Could it be a species of Eucomis, Pineapple Flower - possibly Eucomis comosa?

I'd agree with it being an Eucomis. As soon as flowering finishes you can remove old flower stem allowing plant to put it's energy into producing several pups. These plants are self fertile and will sometimes produce seed on old stems so there is the option to leave flowers to produce seed. These plants sucker reasonably well and are fairly easy to split once suckers become a little more established. Don't overwater and try to avoid humid areas as this will cause rot.

If your plant is indeed a Eucomis, this document may be of interest to you in growing it as a houseplant.
