I received 2 dieffenbachias from my father-in-law's funeral a year and a half ago. Although I say "2", in reality, there are several plants in each pot. I would like to divide them into more than just the 2 pots. Any suggestions how to do this? I've attached 2 photos of one pot.

Just take your plant out of the pot and cut some of the babies away from the larger plant. Make sure that the little ones have some root and then pot them up. There shouldn't be any real trick to it. You might want to ware good gloves and keep the sap away from everyone else. It is VERY toxic.

So it will be okay to cut thru the rootball so both will have some? I did this recently with my Peace Lily but was scared to death I'd kill her. Just didn't know if I could get away with doing that on a dumb cane.

Could I also do it with a croton?

You can also propagate Deiffenbachia by stem cuttings. Cut a piece of stem and bury it shallowly in good quality Promix or something of the like. I agree with the gloves also the sap is toxic and can cause a rash that burns. Janet

Thanks for that info. However, I really don't need to propagate: there's about 12 established plants in each pot.
