I have several walnut trees on my property that I believe to be black walnut... there is one tree that the leaves are just ever so slightly different on... they are more narrow, less flat and just a tad bit more veiny and noticably spaced out more than on my other trees... but the big difference right now is the purple buds or growth that is on every branch... is it a disease, or a different variety... I'm leaning towards disease... but couldn't find anything on the internet that described what I'm seeing... and could the differences in leaves just be because the tree is less healthy? I am attaching pictures... thanks in advance for anyone who can tell me what it is!!! the picture with the two leaf samples has the black walnut on the left, and the one in question on the right... notice how the leaves are spaced out more... and what you can't see is that they are not as flat and smooth in texture...
Those look like galls, which is not uncommon with walnut trees down here in Ecuador. (although ours are Juglans neotropica) It doesn't hurt the tree any. Sorry I can't help on the ID of the second tree. What I can say is that I've observed some variation in leaflet spacing on my Andean Walnuts, so the odd tree out might just be a variation of Juglans nigra. Oh and BTW the walnut on the tree in pic 3 is pretty close to ripe, if colour is any indication...
Yep, both are Black Walnut Juglans nigra; the different leaflet spacing is just individual variation. The nut in pic 3 is still immature, it'll be ripe in September or early October.
